FNB Art Joburg : Zanele Muholi

SponsoredNomathembaBellz

A celebration of silent beauty & sexuality . I loved seeing Zanele’s work after following them for ages online. Zanele is a visual activist and as soon as you look at their work, you can see their fight.

This was my first time seeing their work in the flesh & it was quite a treat. The first piece I saw was this sculpture , it seemed like that could be me, everyday typing away at the office chained by the comfort of corporate.

Behind the sculpture, a header of one of their more famous pieces , which you could take a selfie next too and then have it added to the wall. That’s so cool ! . As you turn around you are met with a wall with their portraits layered on the wall. The work is so sensual and dark , its captivating & it pulls you in.

Their eyes are such a focal part of this photo , I love their promise, there’s a light in center of each eye, as if a door opens and you walk into their identity.

I hope you meet their work too, it will give you goosebumps.

“With the series Somnyama Ngonyama, I have decided to turn the camera on myself. In contrast to my life-long project of documenting members of my black LGBTI community in South Africa and beyond, one in which I normally have the privilege of witnessing participants’ presentation of themselves according to their own self-image, with this new work I have created portraits in which I am both participant and image-maker” ..
