A day at Gogo Wini’s Garden

It’s a cloudy morning here in Durban, I am on my way to Eshowe to see uGogo Wini. I have been watching my gardening tools waste away with no true purpose so I am dropping them off by an active gardener. Its an emotional process but, they have a better home.

I arrived to find the house smelling like breakfast & warmth. She prepared a meal for me to share with uMkulu Mthiyane on a big brown round table. Then we took a little ride to her beautiful garden.

She asked for this space which used to be a missionary house yard. She explained that in her time the missionaries had beautiful gardens there and she wanted to revive the space. She fenced it , cleaned it up & started farming up a storm.

She is currently farming beans, and occasionally receives help in the form of seedling, tractor services from the department of agriculture. She gets assistance for a small fee from the local cane cutters and people of the community she works in. She has access to hectares of land in a near by village but she’s taking her time before growing more plants. Her veggies are sold to the local community. She prides herself on using organic manure, from the goats in another nearby village .

She’s living my dream ! I love to see #BlackGirlsWithLand !
