When I need to clear my head, I try head out into the mountains for a Saturday morning hike.
Over the years I have visited these reserves several times and I am dying for new spots, put me on tu !

Hiking spots around Joburg
- Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve – This is my favorite hiking trail because for R80 you get access to a range of wild animals, flowers , a 10 km hiking trail, and a 5 km trail as well. The trail is clearly marked, and the flowers are so beautiful in season. The reserve is large enough for you to do a game drive. The 5 kms is steep so you feel the heat on your legs, but the 10 km will humble you.

- Modderfontein Dam Trail – This is the most accessible spot as its in town, basically at the same spot as Farmer’s Market. The trail is flat offering both 5 and 10 kms, but the views are gorgeous. There’s a water stream inside the reserve that has the cutest little nests hanging randomly.

- Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve – Klips is very popular with generous variety of trails, horses , water streams and old residential houses from the tribes that migrated in the area. The entrance is free, and the greeny is gorgeous.

- Hennops Pretoria – Challenging Hike, the 15 km is a test of character, and you don’t see it coming. Bring lots of water & sunscreen. There are several bridges to cross across in the reserve, but you come out healed, with a few sore bones depending on your fitness levels. The trail is well marked, preserved & maintained.

- Gillooly’s Farm is one hike I have yet to attempt, I visited the farm hoping to hike one morning but ended up journaling infront of the ducks because the weeds were so tall. It rained the night before so everything was soggy but the water was buzzing & the ducks were entertaining.

The parking is secure at these parks, there’s also biking trails & picnic areas. Next on my agenda is the Kloof area at the Wolwespruit Bike & Trail Park, are you coming ?
