On one Saturday morning, I felt this deep need to be where I could fill my cup. I called my great grandma and she said to put on some lipstick and go to the gallery. I knew Ayanda Mabulu was exhibiting, and I was keen to check out the latest work at Everard Read; I was on time, it only opens 9 to 1 pm on Saturday so you must be early.
I found Ayanda Mabulu speaking about the kids and the future. They were holding candles and I felt like I was late for church 😊. The discussion ended and I took pictures of the three pieces below. The experience was very family orientated; it showed a strong connection amongst different generations. A great context for the 3 portrait’s that stood there in all their glory behind an old boat. What a treat. Cup filled 😊.
The three ladies are so distinct in their energies and stories. One carries a crocodile; one has a snake on her neck and the other sips tea in a lush garden. The amount of detail on their skin, the precision of it all, the Ghanaian fabrics, the breasts, the dresses, the tattoos, earrings , the shear size of the pieces. I wondered what kind of house, office or building I would put the pieces in. I hope the buyer bought all 3 pieces.

I also had an opportunity to see this glorious piece at the FNB Art Faire. Words failed me shame. The bead work, the detail. This piece won the art faire for me. It made all the Nguni girls in me feel seen & loved & celebrated.
